David James Whitney, 71, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 11, 2025, surrounded by family. He was born on October 20, 1954, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Donald and Lorraine Whitney. Dave resided in Conway, Arkansas, with his family for 38 years.
Dave began his career with the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Nebraska. He earned several certificates and apprenticeships, including pipefitting, sheet metal work, and welding. He later transferred with the railroad to North Little Rock, Arkansas, where he retired after 25 years of dedicated service.
Dave was a skilled sportsman who loved taking his boat out fishing, especially snagging at locks and dams, where he caught record-breaking fish. He was often invited to commercial fish and was considered a professional fisherman by many. He was also a talented harmonica player and learned to play guitar in his late 40's, eventually playing in a band for fun.
He enjoyed bowling and competed with several teams that won their leagues. Dave was a good golfer and enjoyed officiating at golf tournaments. He also loved hunting, mowing, and gardening, often growing enough produce to share with friends and neighbors. He enjoyed watching sports and was a devoted Nebraska Cornhusker football fan. Dave was the proud owner of a collector’s 1990 Ford F-150, which he kept in immaculate condition.
Truly a jack of all trades, Dave could fix just about anything. He took tremendous pride in all he did and worked very hard for everything he owned. He was known for sharing his wisdom and life lessons with his kids that they will carry with them for years to come. Dave cherished the simple things in life, especially spending time at home with his wife and working in his shop, cleaning and repairing things.
Dave was a dedicated husband to his wife, Laureen, for 48 years. They met and began dating at just 14 years old and remained together ever since. He was a present and loving father to his three children: Jacob Whitney, Emily Hartle (JR), and Laura Whitney. He deeply loved and adored his grandson, John David.
He is also survived by his older brother, Terry Whitney (Linda), of Omaha, Nebraska, along with nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of wonderful friends. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Lorraine Whitney.
Let us celebrate his life and cherish the many memories he left with us. A visitation and service will be held at Rosewood Cremation, 438 Hwy. 64, Conway, AR 72032, on Friday, December 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The family is planning a trip in his honor to spread his ashes at the various rivers he loved to fish.
