Morrilton, Arkansas
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Arvil Dennis Surratt, lovingly known as ‘Big Popa” and ‘Ratt,’ who passed away on June 21, 2026, at the age of 71. Dennis was born to the late Quincey and Billie Jean Surratt in Mobile, Alabama. He lived a life filled with hard work, laughter, fierce loyalty, and unconditional love for his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Roger Surratt.
Left to cherish his memory are Ann Surratt whom his love never faltered; his daughter Ashley (Eric) Hoelzeman; his son, Justin Dennis Surratt; and the pride and joy of his life-his grandchildren: Zakk (Cheyanne) Hoelzeman, Halen, Emerson (Tristan), Axl, and Phoenix Hoelzeman, Makenly Surratt and Kaylee Marie. He is also survived by his sister, Sindy (Dave) Surratt-Clarkson, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends.
Dennis was a man who never met a stranger and had memories from every encounter. He had a larger- than- life personality, a quick sense of humor, and a story for every occasion especially from all the weddings and events with the ‘slushie machine.’ He worked tirelessly throughout his life, owning and operating Surratt and Son Trucking for 16 years before becoming the dependable ‘utility player’ at ETW Enterprise.
A proud graduate of Morrilton High School’s class of 1974, Dennis never outgrew his love of football. He was always happy to remind anyone willing to listen that he was part of the MHS Championship football teams of 1971 and 1973 and The Elite Eleven. Dennis went on to play football at UCA, carrying with him the pride, determination, and competitive spirit that would define much of his life. His love for sports carried over to Sacred Heart Catholic School where he started and coached the 1st softball team and was a part of booster club for numerous years. Dennis loved drag racing, motorcycles, and getting into mischief.
But of all the titles he held- athlete, truck driver, business owner, coach, coworker-the title he cherished most was ‘Big Popa’ There was rarely a sporting event, school function, or special moment involving his grandchildren that he would miss. He could almost always be found in the front row, cheering the loudest, celebrating the hardest, and yes occasionally giving the referees and officials a difficult time. His grandchildren never had to wonder if Big Popa would be there. He always was.
Dennis’ greatest legacy is not found in trophies, championships, or years of work. It is found in the people who loved him. It is found in the memories made around ball fields, family gatherings, and long conversations. His family will forever miss hearing his voice from the stands, listening to his stories, and feeling the comfort of knowing he was always in their corner. Though our hearts are broken by his absence, we are grateful for every moment, every memory, and every lesson he left behind. The world feels a little quieter without Big Popa in it.
A Celebration of Dennis life will be held 2:00p.m. Friday, June 26, 2026 at Rosewood Funeral & Cremations in Conway 438 Hwy 64 E. Conway, AR 72032.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Booster Club.
